Dakar, Senegal – December 6, 2024: The Vision Zero strategy in Senegal took a significant leap forward with a comprehensive workshop held from December 2-6, 2024. This event, hosted by the Social Security Fund of Senegal, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Vocational Training, workers, and employers, the
civil society as well as the Association of occupational physicians.
The workshop, led by Helmut Ehnes, Chair of the Vision Zero Committee from Germany, and Alexander Morales, a medical doctor from the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile, focused on reducing occupational accidents and diseases by using Vision Zero as a strategic tool for implementation.
The main outcomes of the workshop included:
- A common agreement by all actors to commit to Vision Zero.
- Promotion of Vision Zero Nationwide: A concerted effort to raise awareness and implement Vision Zero principles across Senegal.
- Training Programs: Initiatives to improve the competence and quality of services provided by workers and employers.
- Cooperation with Enterprises: Strengthening partnerships with businesses to foster safer working environments.
- Vision Zero Awards: Recognizing and rewarding organizations that excel in implementing safety measures.
- Data Collection and Statistics: Enhancing the collection and analysis of data to benchmark and track progress in occupational safety.

This workshop marks a pivotal moment in Senegal's commitment to creating safer workplaces and reducing the incidence of work-related accidents and diseases. The collaborative efforts and strategic measures discussed are yet to be finalised and agreed upon by the stakeholders in a high-level follow-up event, taking place in January 2025. The Vision Zero strategy is expected to pave the way for a safer and healthier working environment for Senegal.
