The Social Security Organization (Perkeso) of Malaysia, organizes the three-day "Conference on Asia Road Safety (CARS) 2024", putting Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach on the agenda.

The CARS 2024 conference is held in Putrajaya, Malaysia, 2–4 September 2024, officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and supported by Vision Zero. The conference gathers around 1,000 participants, including experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from various countries, all united in addressing critical issues related to road safety and sustainable mobility.

Dr Mohammed Azman, CEO of Perkeso and President of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), spoke on the opening day about “Road Safety: Vision Zero and the Safe System Approach”. He emphasised that Malaysia has taken significant strides towards addressing road safety, including new regulations requiring motorcycles to be equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) from 2025. The Deputy Prime Minister also pointed to Malaysia's efforts to expand public transport, such as introducing special bus lanes, which have led to a significant a increase in daily bus passengers.

At the same time, the stakes remain high. Recent data shows over 82,000 employment accident cases in Malaysia were reported to Perkeso last year, with 1,060 tragic fatalities. Many of these were related to commuting. Dr Azman therefore appealed to everyone, “Together, let us commit to taking bold and innovative steps to save lives and create safer roads for everyone as we move towards Vision Zero.” Malaysia and Perkeso have made road safety and combating commuting accidents through the Vision Zero approach a priority for a number of years. This was rewarded as a good practice in 2019 and a webinar series on the topic was organized in 2021.
