The Vision Zero initiative continues to gain momentum across Africa, with significant strides made in both the construction and mining sectors this year. Following the successful national launch of Vision Zero in Uganda on August 16, 2024, the Workers Compensation Fund Control Board hosted a landmark event in Livingstone, Zambia, to introduce the Vision Zero initiative to the construction sector.

The event, held on August 29, 2024, was graced by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, who emphasized the government’s commitment to improving safety standards in the industry. Various stakeholders, including industry leaders and safety experts, gathered to showcase their dedication to creating safer working environments. The launch highlighted the collaborative efforts to reduce workplace accidents and promote a culture of safety.

Looking ahead, the Vision Zero initiative is set to make a significant impact in the mining sector. At the end of October 2024, the Chamber of Mines will launch the Vision Zero initiative for the mining industry. This event is the result of a collaborative effort facilitated by the International Social Security Association (ISSA) Mining Section, the Africa Vision Zero Network, and the Chamber of Mines. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed during the launch to formalize this partnership, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing occupational safety and health in the mining sector.

As Vision Zero expands across various sectors, it continues to build a strong foundation for a safer and healthier working environment in Africa.
